Research Description

Stem cells differentiate into new cell types or remain renewable. Transcription factors regulate the processes that determine cell fate. Our program will determine structures of assemblies of proteins and DNA that determine fates of stem cells. Recent discoveries suggest that non stem cells such as fibroblasts can be manipulated by activation of a few stem cell transcription factors to become induced pleuripotent stem cells which have some characteristics of pleuripotent stem cells. These cells may be differentiated to acquire new fates. With the Joint Center for Structural Genomics, structures will be determined for transcription factor machines
