Mid-Atlantic Crystallography Meeting and Workshops

Register now for the 42nd annual Mid-Atlantic Macromolecular Crystallography meeting, being held from May 28 – June 2, 2012 at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA, USA. This 2½-day conference will highlight the latest advances in new biology and new methods made possible by macromolecular crystallography. Talks will be selected from submitted abstracts, with preference given to more junior members of the community.

Crystallographers of all experience levels are invited to a workshop focusing on structure determination using HKL-3000. This hands-on workshop, organized by Drs. Maks Chruszcz and David Cooper of Dr. Wladek Minor's laboratory (PSI MCSG and NYSGRC) and featuring Dr. Jim Pflugrath from Rigaku Americas, will demonstrate structure determination using HKL-3000. HKL-3000 seamlessly combines the data processing and scaling capabilities of HKL-2000 with other state-of-the-art crystallographic software to allow all parts of the structure solution and refinement process to be handled within one program. Participants are encouraged to bring their own difficult data sets or can solve structures using sample data sets.

To register for the conference or the workshop, please visit the conference website at http://www.mid-atlantic.org.

Help PSI Figure Out What Some Proteins Do

As structural biology trends towards a high-throughput mode, nearly 3000 structures (4% of the Protein Data Bank) were determined for proteins and domains whose functions remain unknown. The PSI-2 project (2005-2010) was responsible for about half of these structures, which can be found, classified by organism, in the Functional Sleuth feature on the SBKB homepage.

The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) announces the availability of administrative supplements to provide funds to enable investigators interested in protein function to capitalize on the information and material products of the Protein Structure Initiative (PSI). These supplements are available for NIGMS-funded research grants (R01, R37 and P01) as well as investigators with peer-reviewed research grants not funded by NIGMS, through the PSI research centers. For more information, visit the Functional Sleuth site or the funding notice (NOT GM-08-123).

Save the Date — PSI:Biology Enabling Technologies Workshop is back for 2012

Back by popular demand, the PSI:Biology Program will hold the next installment of the “Enabling Technologies” Workshop, presenting the latest technologies and ideas to surpass experimental bottlenecks to protein production and structure determination. This one-day workshop will be held on December 12, 2012 in the Building 49 Auditorium at the NIH campus, Bethesda, MD, USA.

Check back with the SBKB for the latest information on program details, website, abstract submission, and registration.

Updates to the SBKB

Current data totals as of 2 May 2012:

  • 19 M rows of annotations in SBKB database about 81369 PDB structures and 302,024 SG structure determination targets in TargetTrack .
